Experience

The Mua Cave Experience

Mua Cave, or Hang Múa, is widely regarded as the 'Great Wall of Vietnam' and offers the undisputed best viewpoint in Ninh Binh. While the cave at the base is interesting, the true attraction is the challenging but rewarding trek up nearly 500 stone steps to the peak of Lying Dragon Mountain (Ngoa Long). From the summit, travelers are treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Tam Coc valley, where limestone karsts rise abruptly from lush rice paddies and traditional sampan boats drift along the Ngo Dong River below. This experience combines physical adventure with unparalleled photographic opportunities, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventurers exploring Northern Vietnam.

Planning

Historical Context

While the cave has ancient origins associated with the Tran Dynasty (13th century), the stone steps and dragon statue are more recent additions designed to create a pilgrimage-like ascent to the viewpoint.

Photography Tips

  • Bring a wide-angle lens for the landscape
  • Use a polarizing filter to cut glare on the river
  • Drone photography is generally restricted—check current local rules
  • Golden hour provides the best depth and color

Insider Tips

  • Bring a change of shirt—you will sweat profusely on the climb
  • Buy water at the bottom, it's cheaper than at the halfway point
  • Go to the dragon side first (left fork) for the best view, then the pagoda side (right fork) if you have energy

Our Partners

  • In partnership with leading local operators including Go Asia Travel, Alo Travel Asia, and Ninh Binh Excursion.

Fun Facts

  • The mountain is called 'Lying Dragon Mountain' due to the dragon statue stretching along the ridge
  • King Tran came here to watch imperial maids dance
  • There are exactly 486 steps to the top

Worth every step!

The climb was tough in the heat, but the view from the top is absolutely unbeatable. Seeing the boats on the river below was magical. Our guide was patient and helpful.

Highlight of our Vietnam trip

Booked the premium tour with the limousine transfer. So much more comfortable than the standard bus. Mua Cave was the best part of the day - the dragon statue is huge!

Beautiful but crowded

The scenery is breathtaking. We went a bit late in the day so it was crowded at the top, but still managed to get great photos. The buffet lunch included was surprisingly good.

Excellent organization

Everything ran like clockwork. Picked up on time, great driver, and the combination with Trang An boat ride made for a perfect day.

Sweaty but spectacular

Bring water and good shoes! The steps are uneven. The view makes you forget the leg pain immediately. Highly recommend the sunset tour option if available.

Great day out

Ninh Binh is beautiful. The hike is short but steep. I liked that we also visited a local family home for tea. Good value for money.

Professional service

The guide spoke excellent English and knew so much history about the ancient capital. Mua Cave gives you the best perspective of the karst landscape.

Must do in Ninh Binh

Don't miss this if you are in Hanoi. It's a long day trip but the limousine bus makes it easy to sleep. The lotus pond at the bottom is also very pretty for photos.
